Bonkers in Burundi!

Ladies listening

It’s my favourite time of year again, when we embark on our spectacularly fruitful large-scale summer outreach with Harvest Initiatives! I’d love your prayer support, because it really makes a difference. Of all the years we’ve done this, there was only one I didn’t ask for intentional prayer, and that was the year with the most opposition and setbacks. Check out these stories from previous campaigns:

Goretti had been paralysed for three years. The team visited and prayed for her. She was healed, and straightaway gave her life to Jesus. Six of her family members and five neighbours also came to Christ on the back of witnessing her healing!

Éric and Aline had travelled 35km to consult a powerful sorcerer. Our team encountered them during their meeting, and all three wereh deeply convicted. They renounced witchcraft, gave their lives to Jesus and did away with all their paraphernalia!

A poor 48-year-old widow in Gahombo had been blind for ten years. She was prayed for, healed, gave her life to Jesus and returned to her home where seven neighbours were blown away at her miraculous healing and likewise chose to follow Jesus, amidst huge rejoicing!

Praying in a circle holding hands before heading onto the streets.

Makobero had been a witch doctor for sixty years. Having encountered the evangelists, he felt convicted and converted; at that point, six of his family also decided to follow Jesus, whilst he burnt all his idols!

22-year-old Désiré was seen by the whole community as a madman wandering around. When the evangelists visited his family, his parents said they’d only listen to the gospel if the team prayed for Désiré first and showed them God’s power. When he was healed, 31 people gave their lives to Jesus in response!

More, Lord!

The 21st annual summer outreach campaign kicks off today, Sunday 26th July, and will run for the next two weeks. We’re sending out 1,600 evangelists into every province in Burundi to do the modern-day Acts of the Apostles.

So this is just asking you to pray (could you daily?) for these 14 days for…

  • God to be powerfully at work across the nation
  • unity, good health, security, and favour with authorities
  • evangelists to have boldness coupled with sensitivity, and for open doors to share the Good News
  • power encounters with witchdoctors, and many Muslims to come to know Jesus as Saviour
  • people to be physically healed in large numbers
  • converts that will become disciples, and local churches to be committed to rigorous follow-up
  • local churches to be strengthened
  • Burundi to be transformed in Jesus’ name!

I LOVE this quote from Smith Wigglesworth: “Live ready. If you have to get ready when the opportunity comes your way, you’ll be too late. Opportunity doesn’t wait, not even while you pray. You must not have to get ready, you must live ready at all times.

Be filled with the Spirit; that is, be soaked with the Spirit. Be so soaked that every thread in the fabric of your life will have received the requisite rule of the Spirit – then when you are misused and squeezed to the wall, all that will ooze out of you will be the nature of Christ.”

I’ll post again in a few weeks with some stories, until then have a great summer.
